Everyone had a great time at the Holiday Party yesterday. The food was fantastic and the singing melodious!!! Catch the photos and you will see what we mean.

There are two upcoming events at our Fall Adult Education Series.

First, on October 27, 2011 come and join us for our Halloween Celebration at lunch. Don’t forget to dress up in your costume and bring your table decorations. We will be having a contest!!

Second, on Thursday, November 10th, join us for our Veterans’ Day Luncheon. $10 gets you lunch and a day’s worth of adult education classes. Come and enjoy the patriotic music of the Whitefield Academy Jazz Band!

It’s time for our Fall Computer Classes! Starting on September 20, 2011 we will begin our Fall class session. This time we are offering a fun combo in the mornings of Powerpoint and Adobe Photoshop Elements. In the afternoon, we are bringing back our Intermediate Computer Skills class.

9:30—11:30 AM The Dynamic Duo: Microsoft Powerpoint and Photoshop Elements

This class is offered each Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 am from September 20, 2011 through October 18, 2011. We will have an additional online session that you can review on your own schedule!

Microsoft PowerPoint is a software program for creating and showing presentations that include slides, outlines, speaker’s notes and audience handouts. In this course designed for beginners, you will learn the fundamentals of PowerPoint, practice using text, pictures and clip art, and then edit your presentation to make it look professional.

We are including an added bonus! In addition to learning the fundamentals of Powerpoint, we will also include an introduction to Photoshop Elements so you can edit your images and then use them to make your slides (or anything else you wish to create) look fantastic. This will come in handy for the Holiday Card Class in November.

1:00—3:00 PM Intermediate Computer Skills

This class is offered each Tuesday morning from 1:00 to 3:00 pm from September 20, 2011 through October 18, 2011. We will have an additional online session that you can review on your own schedule!

In this course, we utilize material from the Introduction to WORD class, the Introduction to EXCEL class and Introduction to Computers. This class takes some of the material presented in the Introductory class to a more advanced level. We work to customize this class to the specific needs of our students. We will work in small groups and give students the chance to work on specific projects of their choice.

Our 30th Anniversary Celebration is coming near! On September 14, 2011 we will be celebrating all of the wonderful years of Lifespan Resources. It looks like it’s going to be a really cool party. If you go to our 30th Anniversary page, you can see all the activities we have planned.

Lifespan has made a big difference in the lives of older adults. Those of us who work for Lifespan see those differences, and the greater demands for services, every single day.

• More and more people contact us every day to ask for rides to medical appointments. We watch our waiting list grow and frequently ask people to reschedule their medical appointment to fit them into the schedule.
• Our Day Club program has added an additional day of care.
• Our computer classes are growing.
• The Adult Education Program continues to get amazing classes with excellent instructors.

Computer Classes

This session we are bringing back an old favorite – Introduction to Computers. If you think we are more advanced or if you have taken this class before, consider joining us this time as well. We work very hard to customize our classes to meet the needs of our individual students. Our classes are small, and we organize the material specifically for the students in that class. The Academy of Volunteers- Atlanta (AVA) starts again in July. AVA provides continuing community education focused on building the skills of volunteers to meet the emotional, psychological, and physical needs of the aging population. Collaborative members have committed to establishing a semi-annual curriculum of classes that will cover specific needs of the aging toward the goal of educating volunteers who will be working with the aging.

Six consecutive, monthly sessions will be offered each session. Lunch and free parking will be provided through donations of sponsoring senior agencies. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of all six sessions. Participants will be asked to evaluate each class and instructor. This program is offered free to agencies, organizations and congregations with volunteers who serve the elderly. Each agency will provide their own orientation of their volunteers. The Academy will be able to offer each agency the ability to give their volunteers the best information available for work with aging from medical professionals and trained experts. Therefore, this program will enhance the quality of care volunteers are able to provide to the elderly. For more information about the present session, just click here for the curriculum and dates.

We have two sessions of computer classes this summer. The first session, from May 24, 2011 through June 28, 2011, will include a Microsoft EXCEL class in the mornings and a Genealogy Class in the Afternoons.

The morning class is a six week class on Microsoft Excel. Excel is a spreadsheet program that helps you manage mathematical information. It is frequently used in today’s workplace. Once you begin to understand the basics, you will find it is an easy and fun application to use. For example, you can use Excel to budget your personal finances and keep track of your investments. You can also use Excel to follow loan repayments, compare different mortgages, create invoices and more.

The afternoon class will be a Genealogy Class. Genealogy can be fun and rewarding. But there’s so much information on the Internet that you may be asking, “Where do I begin?” and “What will work for me?” This course is designed as an introduction to online genealogy to help you learn vocabulary, get organized and begin to sort through all the possibilities. We will also discuss ways to organize your files and information, scanning old photos and documents and available software. You will do your own research and make your own discoveries—discoveries you can pass on to your children and grandchildren.

Our computer lab will be open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on March 29, 2011! You can stop by anytime and take a look. If you have questions about our computer classes, you can come by and ask. We love our lab and we are thrilled to have the chance to show it off.

Computer classes being on April 5, 2011 and run for 6 weeks, through May 10, 2011. From 9:30 to 11:30 we will be offering Introduction to Microsoft WORD. In the afternoon, from 1:00 to 3:00 we will bne offering “connecting with Friends and Family.” The first section deals with managing your email, creating email groups and address books. The second section of the class deals with Skype and Facebook.
